The Death Penalty

1) What are your thoughts on Capital Punishment?
2) Do the scriptures have anything to say about this?

I am not really sure how I feel about this prompt, because as much as I believe that people can be forgiven of any sin, murdering is a big deal. I looked it up in the concordance, and I was kind of suprised at what it said. Numbers 35:31 says'Do not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. He must surely be put to death.' In Genesis 9:6, it says that "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man." However, I also know that the bible says that all sins are equal and that hating a brother is just as bad as mudering him. So...someone help me out on this one because the bible contradicts itself alot. I didn't know that I was so unsure until I actually looked it up (which is supposed to answer questions, by the way). Someone else take a stab, because I think I just did alot of rambling and didn't get anywhere.

Well, I agree with Whit(ley, ney?). This is really confusing. I realize that a murderer deserves to die according to Number 35:31 and Genesis 9:6, but then if someone is put to death for murder, isn't the judge who sentenced the death penalty murdering someone also, or the guy who actually does the whole killing part (I don't really know what that person is called...)? And if he is, shouldn't HE be sentenced to death according to scripture. And then the judge who sentences the other judge to death would be killing that judge.. so now we just have a chain of death penalties that like, never ends. And then if sins are equal, should we be put to death for hating someone? I mean, I don't think so, but the bible leads you to believe that. Its tough. I don't know.

well scriptures say that man does not have the right to take someones life, so i dont believe in capital punishment. :)

Ladies,
can someone be "beyond" the point of forgiveness?

Does capital punishment put man in the position of God?

this is tough isn't it?

Well, the Bible says that the only "unforgiveable" sin is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Luke 12:10), where someone lives their life in direct defiance of God (represented by the Holy Spirit). As Christians, I think it is our duty to forgive murderers for their crimes, just as Jesus did when he was on the cross (Luke 23:39-43). I know it's way easier said than done, but that doesn't change the fact that we need to forgive others for their crimes. But, the death penalty is centuries old (people were getting stoned to death for adultery in Jesus' day), and old habits die hard. Personally, I don't think the death penalty is right, one of the Beatitudes states "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy" (Matthew 5:7). I'm not saying that we should march on Capitol Hill and demand an end to the death penalty, I'm just saying that we should probably think twice about forgiving those on death row.

Well, all of my initial references came from the old testament, before Jesus came to "re-educate" the world. Some of the ideas in the old testament changed with Jesus giving his own life for us. We would die if he hadn't saved us, so why should we keep other people from having the chance to be saved? Responding to Nate, that is a HUGE power put in the hands of the Judge, the jury, the prosecution, etc. that no man should have the right to decide. It really isn't fair to try and determine who should live and who should die, that's God's job!

is Death Row a good alternative to the Death Penalty?

this is SO weird that the first time i get on here the topic is something that i've really been pondering on lately. The subject of capital punishment upsets me because i can't figure out exactly how i feel about it. Two days ago Sadam Hussein was hanged and i can't decide if it was right to have him killed. Sadam killed thousands of people and for some reason, to me, this seems different from a man who kills one person. Which is why the fact that the bible states that all sins are equal confuses me even more...ugh. does anyone agree that sometimes extreme crimes seem more worthy of the death penalty than others? or is that just me?

Nate is slapping some huge stuff on here. I believe capital punishment is wrong but, I never really thought about it theologically. I do believe that we are to be a people of grace and mercy and that as created we cannot make the decision about when another life that is created should end(or begin but, that is another question). Hmm... I will have to get on the biblical grindb about this. I like what I am hearing. I like the struggle, living as a follower is often confusing but God is within the struggle.
